Monster Tarpons

Monster Tarpons

Today we fished a 6 hour trip. Because of the strong East winds we chose to stay inshore and fish the Key West Harbor for Tarpon. The Tarpon bite has been so good recently so we knew it was going to be a productive trip. About 15 minutes into to fishing and on our 8th or 9th drift back we hooked our first fish. She was one of the bigger Tarpon we have fought this season weighing around 130 pounds. After a 90 minute fight all over and a leader touch the fish ended up spitting the hook. We went back to our anchor and saw the tide had changed on us. After making a short move and chunking dead Pinfish behind the boat for a few minutes we jumped our next fish. She was an easy 100 pounds and too ran us all over the harbor. Once again after an hour or so battle the fish spit the hook after a leader touch. We were 2 for 2 on releases but still wanted that once and a lifetime photo for our charter. We tied back up to our anchor and started over. Our 3rd or 4th bait back got smacked and our charter, James, knew what to do. The fish took line and after weaving in and out of anchored boats, crab traps, and buoys we got her next to the boat and snapped some pictures. All the fish were safely released with circle hooks and were at least 100 pounds.
