8 Tarpon

8 Tarpon

Once again we had two trips today. The first 8 hours were the second day of the Shell Tournament here in Key West. Our guys said they wanted to lay low and stay in the harbor today and try to mess with some Tarpon. With the way Tarpon fishing is right now I couldn't have been happier to hear this. I knew the guys would love it and I knew I would get them on to a ton of nice fish, guaranteed. It didn't take long to hook up and before we knew it by the end of the day we had 6 fish hooked and got an official catch on 5 of those fish. The smallest fish was still big weighing in at about 85 pounds or so by my estimation. We had a few brutes in there too well over 100 pushing 125 pounds.

The second trip was with two really good friends and we tried something a little new. My buddy brought down his two person kayak so I anchored the boat and started chunking for Tarpon in the mouth of the Harbor. Meanwhile I had my mate, Andrew, and my friend, Mac, load the kayak into the water and hold onto a short line connected to the boat. Mac was in the front and kept making drifts back into the current. It didn't take long before he felt the bite and hooked a big fish. Andrew let go of the line, grabbed his paddle, and the fight was on. Well over an hour later and about a mile down current they were finally able to beach the kayak and fight the fish in waist high water. We got some incredible shots of the fish during the fight and she was safely released using a circle hook like all of our Tarpon
