Double Digit Tarpon

Double Digit Tarpon

Today we had two 4 hours trips and we spent all 8 of the fishing hours in the Key West Harbor targeting big Tarpon. The morning bite took about 25 minutes to kick up be we caught, fought, and released a nice fish over about an hour and fifteen minutes to start off the day. When we got back we re set our anchor as the tide had switched during the fight. After chumming for a few minutes we started to see some fish eating chunks right off the back of the boat. We hooked a 100 plus pound Sand Shark hovering around back there and after releasing it we hooked a 100 plus pound Tarpon. For the four hours we spent 3 of them fighting fish all over 100 and finished the trip going 3 for 5.

In the second half we had a few more fish pull the hook really early. The first 3 fish made hard runs, then jumped, spitting the hook out of its mouth. We were down 0-3 to the fish and hooked and than hooked one that stayed on for quite a while. This fish was about 125 pounds and fought for all of an hour. We got her boat side and safely released her. Our next fish spit the hook on its first jump, and the one after that spit it about 5 minutes in, but after we got a leader touch so it technically was a catch. Our next two fish we hooked and fought for an hour each. They too were well over 100 pounds. We finished out the trip going 4 for 7, and 7 for 12 on the day.
